Many people mistakenly believe that Tuberculosis infections are a thing of the past, but the truth is that there are thousands of new cases each year in the United States. The infection is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and mainly affects the lungs and respiratory system. If undetected and untreated, TB can also spread to other parts of the body including the digestive system, and even the central nervous system. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone infected actually becomes sick. But persons with a latent TB infection (LTBI) can easily spread the infection to others, particularly if they are in a high risk population.

Being a parent can often be a thankless job, particularly if you have teenagers in your home. Some parents have more success than others at maintaining open lines of communication with their children, but even the most well-behaved and well-intentioned kids get caught lying to their parents on a daily basis. It’s not possible to monitor your children’s activities all the time, and sometimes it’s best to trust, but verify. And when it comes to recreational drug use, you can’t afford to stay in the dark. A donor came in for a Federal DOT (department of transportation) test, and, had you walked in behind him, you would have thought we were a marijuana dispensary. We concluded he must have been smoking in his vehicle because the odor was so strong. For reference, marijuana is still federally illegal and DOT employees (truck drivers) are not allowed to use it. We proceeded to start the regulated drug test already very suspicious based on our senses. The donor produced a specimen we would not accept because it had a strong ammonia smell.
In today’s economy, businesses are struggling to survive more than ever. The Covid pandemic has already forced many businesses to close, and the heightened emphasis on cleanliness and safety procedures is forcing companies to do more with less people. With so much at risk, can you really afford a workplace accident or a worker’s compensation claim? Businesses are operating with skeleton crews and tighter profit margins than ever before. A work stoppage or injured personnel could be disastrous.
