Who needs a TB Test?-Many types of jobs where individuals come into regular contact with people in high-risk populations require TB skin tests as a condition of employment. High-risk populations include babies and young children, the elderly, the immunocompromised, and illicit drug users. Annual TB tests are usually required for preschool and kindergarten teachers, prison guards, and healthcare workers at long-term care facilities and hospitals. They’re also strongly recommended for individuals caring for sick or aging relatives in their homes and people traveling overseas.

What is Tuberculosis?-Tuberculosis infections are caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis and they primarily affect the lungs and respiratory system. Common symptoms include a cough that lasts over three weeks, fevers, chills, night sweats, and rapid weight loss.

What happens if I’m infected?-Not everyone infected with TB actually becomes sick. Persons with a latent TB infection (LTBI) can easily spread the infection to others, particularly if they are in a high-risk population. Tuberculosis is treatable, but early detection is important to prevent the spread of the infection to other parts of the body, including the digestive system and the central nervous system.
