We had a customer request that we “monitor” a drug test for one of their employees. A monitored collection is different than a directly observed collection.

Monitored simply means the door remains open and the donor turns his back to the collector. Directly observed is defined as the collector must directly observe the urine leaving the donors body, directly observed collections are quite invasive.

This donor, while attempting to void, displayed unusual body language and the collector heard a weird clicking sound. Due to these observations the collector moved closer to the donor which made the donor very nervous, and he dropped a urine filled eye dropper into the toilet.

The collector immediately stopped the collection and asked the donor to dispose of the eye dropper and wait in the waiting room while the collector called the DER (designated employee representative aka the customer).

After speaking to the DER, it was determined the donor would get a 2nd chance, but this time the void would be directly observed. The subsequent observed collection was completed and resulted in a positive test.
