First Choice Drug Testing

Opioid medication administered under medical supervision is one way for people who suffer from chronic pain or are recovering from a traumatic injury to get some badly-needed relief. Unfortunately, far too many individuals abuse opioids recreationally and risk the lives of others by getting behind the wheel and showing up for work under the influence. First Choice is Arkansas’ most trusted third-party test administrator, and we’re here to keep drugs and alcohol out of the workplace. But what if you’re a job seeker who’s using prescription opioids for a legitimate medical reason?

Pre-employment and random drug testing are standard operating procedures at most companies, and we can typically get donors in and out in 30 minutes or less. We keep a Medical Review Officer (MRO) on staff to verify the accuracy of all test results, and we’re always happy to help companies of any size develop and administer their random drug testing programs. We also offer reasonable suspicion training so you’ll know when it’s appropriate to send your employees to us for testing.

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) considers a prescription legal as long as it’s used by the person to whom it was prescribed, regardless of its expiration date. Taking legally prescribed opioids shouldn’t automatically exclude you from employment, but there may be reportable safety concerns if the job’s responsibilities include operating a motor vehicle or other heavy industrial machinery.

Be sure to let us know about all prescription medications you’re taking during your drug test so that our MRO can authenticate the prescription through your pharmacy or physician.
Unless otherwise indicated, it’s generally safe to use prescription drugs past their expiration date, but keep in mind that they’re going to be less effective over time. Some opioids are prescribed on a PRN (as needed) basis, and it’s legal to keep and use leftover medication until you run out. Just be sure to keep opioids away from children at all times, and contact your doctor if you continue to experience chronic pain or other symptoms after your medication reaches its expiration date.
